A brief overview of unix commands
Dos is very similar to unix, so if you have experience using Dos this may help. There is one important difference, unix is case sensetive, be very careful of this!

You will need to use some of the commands below to download the software:

cd - Change Directory.
Whenever you are asked to change directory you will use this command in the form 'cd <path_name>'.

ls - List
This command lists the contents of the current directory.

more - More
This command will display the contents of a text file, pausing after each screen. <return> will advance 1 line, and <space> will advance 1 screen. Use this command to view the README files that appear in most of the Mac directories describing its contents.

sz - Send Zmodem
This command is used to download files if you have a shell account. The command 'sz <file_name>' is used. Some older terminal programs do not support Zmodem protocol, you will need to use the command 'sx'.

sx - Send Xmodem
Used in the same way as sz, 'sx <file_name>'.

Instruction list (complex)

  1. Dial the number 9967-4777 with your terminal program to connect to Nectar.
A terminal program allows your computer to act as a dumb terminal for connecting to services, such as bulletin boards. Your modem should have come with such a program.

  2. At the 'nectar>' prompt type 'shell', then enter your username & password at the prompts that follow. You should now be connected to Nectar.

  3. Change to the directory '/pub/mac'. The README file in this directory lists most of the contents of the sub-directories.

  4. Change to the directory '/pub/mac/system'. Download the latest version of FreePPP using the 'sz' command.

  5. Change to the directory '/pub/mac/web'. Download Netscaepe:
If you have 9+ meg of free RAM memory after the system download Netscape3.01
    Otherwise download Netscape2.02

  6. Change to the directory '/pub/mac/util'. Download the file 'stuffitexpander4.01.sea.bin' containing StuffIt Expander. Your terminal program should automaticaly decode the .bin file into a Self Extracing Archive.

  7. Double click the SEA file to install StuffIt Expander.

  8. Disconnect from Nectar.
Note: Make sure you have read ALL of this document BEFORE disconnecting.

  9. Install MacTCP.
Place the MacTCP control panel in your control panels folder.

  10. Decode and decompress the FreePPP archive by draging it onto StuffIt Expander.

  11. Double click the FreePPP installer to install FreePPP.
Note: The installer will restart your computer after it has finished to make FreePPP available.

  12. Setup MacTCP as shown in the file:
    http://www.nectar.com.au/help/mac/mactcp.html

  13. Setup FreePPP as shown in the file:
    http://www.nectar.com.au/help/mac/freeppp.html

  14. Setup Netscape as shown in the file:
    http://www.nectar.com.au/help/mac/clients/netscape.html

How do I connect?
Follow the instructions at the end of the FreePPP Setup file.

Other software
After you are able to connect to Nectar you will probably want to download other software using Netscape. Go to the address 'ftp://ftp.nectar.com.au/pub/mac/', and view the README files.

Eudora is a very good e-mail client program.

YA-NewsWatcher is a very good usernet news client program.

The Macintosh client program setup pages, at http://www.nectar.com.au/help/mac/clients/, contain instructions for setting up these programs as well as others.
